Key Locks are secure and legally compliant. However, this is dependent on whether an unauthorised person or criminal, gains access to the gun safe key. In order to mitigate this risk, an alternative may be to install an electronic combination lock where the combination is unique to the user.
Two types of electronic locks are available: combination locks and biometric locks.
Combination Locks can accommodate 1 – 99 unique users, allowing each user to programme their own code.
Similarly, the Biometric (fingerprint) lock can be programmed to allow access to up to 99 different users. This type of lock is particularly suitable when speedy access is important, for example, in the case of a home invasion, when quick, easy access to your gun is required.
Electronic locks are however, dependent on electricity for proper function and given the current situation in South Africa, where load shedding has become the norm, rather than the exception, this type of lock will only remain functional for the life of the back-up battery, when normal electricity supply is interrupted.
For institutions that require visitors or members to surrender their guns for safe keeping when on your property, multiple single gun safes which have dual-key access are recommended. The custodian of the gun safe will hold the master key and each depositor will hold the relevant key for the gun safe.
