The Importance of Safe Maintenance and Servicing

In terms of safety and security, it is important to have a safe to secure your valuables, and ensure that it is the right safe for your specific needs. It is just as important to secure the space that your safe is in by fixing or bolting the safe in place. The other consideration is to ensure that your safe is kept well maintained to avoid any issues from arising and top minimise risk.

When a safe is in regular use and is opened and closed regularly, the mechanical parts or elements can suffer from wear and tear.

What does safe servicing involve?

Our maintenance service involves:
  • Removing old oils and greases from the doors and mechanisms that have accumulated over time
  • Servicing or replacing oils and greases to the doors and hinges
  • Servicing the locks or replacing the locks, as needed
  • Making necessary adjustments to hinges, bolts and any type of locking mechanism for re-alignment (combination, key locks and digital locks)

Once done, your safe will be left neat, clean and in good working order to further ensure the safety of your belongings.

How often should I service my safe?

Frequency of safe servicing depends largely on how often a safe is opened and closed. If it is being regularly used, and is opened daily or hourly, then annual servicing is recommended. For less frequently used safes, servicing can happen bi- annually, however, it is important to regularly check the safe to ensure that it is in good working order.

How do I know if my safe needs a service?

  • If the safe has been tampered with in a break-in. Even if there is no outward damage visible it is always advisable to have the safe checked for damages
  • If you are buying a second-hand safe
  • The safe is no longer opening or closing correctly
  • There is any difficulty or stiffness in opening the lock
  • The lock appears to be loosening or the key is no longer inserting easily into the lock
  • The door feels stiff when opening the safe door
  • Any issues with the combination locks
  • Any issues with the combination locks

All locks consist of moving parts and it is inevitable that at some stage these may need to be looked at. If unsure, please feel free to contact us for advice.
